The Church of the Deposition of the Robe in Suzdal rises on the steep bank of the Mzhara River, which flows into Kamenka. In ancient times, this place was the Vvedensky women's monastery, destroyed by hordes of Mongol Tatars in 1238.

Short story

In 1617, there were two wooden churches, consecrated in honor of the Nativity of Christ and the Feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. The current ensemble of "paired" churches was formed in the 18th century... In 1749, at the expense of parishioners, a stone temple of the Sign was erected. In 1777, with the money of the merchants Zubkov, next to the "summer" Znamensky temple built a "winter" church, consecrating it in honor of the Orthodox holiday of the Position of the Robe of the Virgin.

History of the Feast of the Deposition of the Robe

This holiday, celebrated on July 2 (July 15 in a new style), is associated with the acquisition of the robe (clothing) of the Mother of God and the founding of the Orthodox metropolis in Rus... According to legend, the Byzantines, brothers Galbi and Candide, making a pilgrimage to the Palestinian shrines, stopped for the night in Nazareth in the house of an elderly Jewish woman. The woman told them that she kept a dear shrine - the robe of the Mother of God. The ark with the robe was transferred to the Blachernae temple in Constantinople, later a part of the belt of the Virgin was placed in this ark. The most important event in Russian history is connected with the robe of the Mother of God: in 860, when the troops of the Russian prince Askold approached Constantinople, the Queen of Heaven, hearing the prayers of the Byzantine emperor Michael III, pacified the belligerence of the warring parties. The Russians and the Byzantines signed a peace treaty, the terms of which included a clause on the baptism of Rus. Soon Askold and his retinue adopted Orthodoxy. In memory of these events, an annual holiday "The Position of the Robe of the Most Holy Theotokos" was established. In honor of the holiday, many churches were built, including the Church of the Robe in Suzdal.

The architecture of the Church of the Robe

The Church of the Deposition of the Robe in Suzdal has a three-part composition: an apse and a refectory adjoin the main volume of the building, crowned with an onion dome on a faceted drum. The central volume, overstated in relation to the refectory and the apse, has an eight-pitched roof with four pediments. Between the “summer” and “winter” churches there is a bell tower - “an octagon on a quadrangle, completed with a hemispherical roof with one dome.
